A Unique Business Model

Innovation Expedition Inc. is a new kind of organization—a virtual cluster. In refining our organizational structure, we have been committed to modeling some of the approaches we are advocating to our clients. Thus, IE Inc. is a network cluster with a facilitating, coordinating Hub Unit. The Hub Unit consists of Donald G. Simpson, Steven Murgatroyd, R. Keith Jones and Dawn Ralph. These four people, through their individual consulting companies, are the shareholders in IE Inc.they own the business and are responsible for its development.


Donald G. Simpson, Ph.D
Founder and Chief Explorer

Don serves as Chairman of the company and continues to operate at the "Chief Explorer"—building national and global relationships; identifying important opportunities for Dialogues and training and action learning initiatives; designing new products for unleashing innovation; and inspiring people to engage in the concepts of a culture of innovation including the idea of renaissance leaders for a global knowledge economy.

Stephen Murgatroyd, Ph.D

Steve has been involved nationally and globally in numerous significant innovations aimed at driving high performing organizations—both for profit and non profit. He has shown particular leadership in the creative application of information and communication technologies to support performance. He was founder and initial director of Athabasca's online MBA program which was recognized as a global breakthrough innovation. He was CEO and Chairman of a UK consulting company (Lifeskills International) and a former Vice President of the Canadian company, Axia NetMedia. Psychologist, journalist and prolific author, Steve is now regarded as a thought leader on innovation policy, strategy and processes. Steve has been connected in various ways with the Innovation Expedition since its launch in 1991.

R. Keith Jones

Keith has an extensive client list with a particular focus on management of natural resources. He also takes the lead in product development for the Expedition's Challenge Dialogue System (CDS)™ and for CDS Action Learning initiatives with IE Affiliates and major clients. He has operated as an independent consultant (R. Keith Jones and Associates) based out of Victoria, British Columbia since the mid-1990s. Keith brings over 30 years of experience in the public and private sectors, working in the natural resources and information technology sectors in BC, Alberta and Ontario. He has worked as a consultant, marketer, software product manager, educator and scientist over the course of his career. His recent assignments often involve working collaboratively with multi-stakeholder teams on complex strategic challenges and opportunities.

Dawn Robinson Ralph

Dawn has been closely linked with the Innovation Expedition since its inception in 1991 in an operations and project development capacity, as well as being an active member of the team building its global networks, the Affiliate program and development of the Challenge Dialogue System™. One of her key roles in the Expedition was her leadership in developing a major partnership with Peter F. Drucker. She served as co-founder and executive director of the Peter F. Drucker Canadian Foundation for social innovation and designed and operated its national award program for non profit innovation.

This cluster also includes a group of Affiliates, who are connected through their companies in a community of practice organized in a flexible network arrangement free of complex legal arrangements, rigid participation requirements or geographic constraints.
